Overview

Senior Legal Counsel, Litigation — Alimentation Couche-Tard. Department: Legal Affairs, Canada. Location: Laval, QC (4204, boul. Industriel, Laval). Employment Type: Permanent, Full-time (40 hours/week).

The Role

Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, Canada, as well as the Litigation Director, the Senior Legal Counsel will be responsible for civil and commercial law mandates, as well as litigation. This includes managing litigation, supervising external counsel, managing risks, and training internal teams to help minimize disputes.

What You Will Do

  • Manage litigation, including case preparation, court support, and settlement negotiations.
  • Refer litigation files to external counsel and follow up.
  • Advise on insurance law and litigation risk management to help minimize disputes.
  • Maintain the litigation tracking system to develop reports on the source, volume, and financial risks of the company’s litigation.
  • Assess case risks and develop risk management strategies.
  • Support reserve analyses by the company’s finance teams.
  • Draft and provide legal opinions mainly in civil and commercial law.
  • Research, analyze, and interpret applicable legislation.
  • Provide legal opinions and practical solutions to various business units.
  • Partner with business units to identify strategies and desired objectives in case preparation.
  • Develop solutions to legal issues raised by employees and support their implementation.
  • Ensure business activities comply with laws, company policies, and sound governance practices.
  • Advise business units on legislative changes relevant to their sector.
  • Keep skills and knowledge up to date in relevant areas of law.
  • Perform all related professional functions.

Education

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)
  • Member in good standing of the Quebec Bar

Experience

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in litigation, insurance law, and civil and commercial law, within a corporation or law firm

Knowledge And Skills

  • Strong expertise in civil and commercial litigation, negotiation, and contract drafting
  • Proven ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision and manage multiple cases within deadlines
  • Analytical and synthesis skills, with the ability to simplify legal concepts
  • Strong organizational and priority-management skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Adaptability in a constantly changing environment

Language Skills

  • Bilingualism (French and English), both written and spoken, is required as the role will serve anglophone regions
