The Senior Manager, Law, Ethics and AI role is responsible to assist the Privacy Officer with the organization’s privacy program including, but not limited to daily operations of the program, development, implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures. They are responsible to provide expert legal advice on privacy and AI to Aviva Canada and the Privacy Office. This includes ensuring appropriate privacy compliance and maintaining an in-tolerance risk and control environment for privacy risks. Along with the Privacy Officer and Senior Manager, Risk and Operations, this role is accountable for Aviva Canada’s compliance to Federal and Provincial Privacy legislation.

What you’ll do
Legal-Specific Accountabilities
Provide legal advice and support to the Privacy Office, General Counsel, and business units on:
- Current and upcoming privacy and AI laws and regulations, case law, and industry best practices.
- Investigations by privacy regulators, including drafting responses and preparing affidavits.
- Litigation-related privacy questions.
- Access requests and other personal information requests, including those from regulators.
- Privacy and AI provisions in third-party contracts.
- Privacy policies, consents, and procedures, including drafting them.
- Data breaches impacting Aviva and/or associated third parties, including on notifications and remediation.
- New, changed, or existing uses, collections, or disclosures of personal information.
- Privacy legal risks, including those related to third parties, including by providing privileged legal advice.
- Engagement with external counsel on privacy and AI matters, including data breaches, access requests, responses to regulators, and privacy and AI compliance.
Day-to-Day Operational Accountabilities
Provide advice and support to the Privacy Office, General Counsel, and business units by:
- Conducting privacy impact assessments.
- Ensuring compliance with Privacy Office policies and procedures, including handling access requests and data breaches.
- Assisting with risk and control assessments, following ORCM methodology.
- Developing and delivering privacy training to business units and privacy champions.
- Participating in internal and industry forums, committees, and working groups.
- Participating in the third-party information and security (TPISA) process, as well as any other third-party oversight processes involving privacy and AI.
- Assisting with new projects and initiatives by providing privacy compliance and risk mitigation advice.
- Preparing internal reporting, including Board reports.
- Coaching and mentoring junior members of the Privacy Office.
- Communicating processes and guidance to stakeholders on privacy and AI.
- Ensuring continuous improvement of privacy and processes, including through review of Privacy Office audit findings and metrics.
- Maintaining and updating the Privacy Office online self-help reference library for privacy champions to use.
What you’ll bring
- Post-secondary education as a Lawyer, Law Clerk or Paralegal from a recognized law school and member in good standing of a law society in any Canadian Province
- Certified Information Privacy Professional/Canada (CIPP/C) designation desired.
- At least seven years working experience in a regulated financial services organization (preferably P&C insurance) or a highly regulated industry.
- Additional legal experience in privacy preferred.
- Experience researching regulation/legislation and case law and the ability to interpret findings and apply them.
- Proven ability to manage projects, negotiations, and relationships both internal and external.
- P&C industry knowledge relevant to specific responsibilities which includes all aspects relevant to Core Activities.
- Excellent collaboration, teamwork, and critical thinking skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Decision making and judgment – ability to bring judgment to facts and problem solve effectively.
- Effective in managing people, teams, and processes.
- Delivers results – ability to focus on key issues, uses resources effectively with a can-do attitude.
