This role involves reviewing technical drawings and specifications, analyzing material and labour requirements, and working closely with engineering, production, and sales teams to develop profitable and well-structured proposals.</p><p><b><strong>Key Responsibilities</strong></b></p><p><b><strong>Estimating & Cost Analysis</strong></b></p><ul><li>Review project drawings, specifications, and client requirements to define scope of work.</li><li>Prepare detailed cost estimates covering materials, labour, equipment, subcontracting, and overhead.</li><li>Develop pricing strategies that balance competitiveness and profitability.</li><li>Maintain accurate records of estimates, assumptions, and historical cost data.</li></ul><p><b><strong>Technical Review</strong></b></p><ul><li>Interpret structural, mechanical, and fabrication drawings.</li><li>Assess fabrication complexity including cutting, forming, welding, machining, and finishing processes.</li><li>Ensure estimates align with applicable industry codes and standards (e.g., CWB, ASME where applicable).</li></ul><p><b><strong>Vendor & Material Coordination</strong></b></p><ul><li>Request and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.</li><li>Coordinate with purchasing to confirm material availability, pricing, and lead times.</li><li>Monitor steel pricing trends and market conditions impacting cost.</li></ul><p><b><strong>Cross-Functional Collaboration</strong></b></p><ul><li>Work closely with engineering, production, and sales teams to refine scopes and resolve technical questions.</li><li>Participate in pre-bid meetings and provide clarifications during the proposal stage.</li><li>Support project handover from estimating to production teams.</li></ul><p><b><strong>Risk & Accuracy Management</strong></b></p><ul><li>Identify potential project risks related to cost, schedule, and fabrication constraints.</li><li>Apply appropriate contingencies and document assumptions clearly.</li><li>Continuously improve estimating accuracy through post-job cost reviews.</li></ul><p><br /></p><p><b><strong>Qualifications</strong></b></p><p><b><strong>Education & Experience</strong></b></p><ul><li>Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.</li><li>Minimum <b><strong>3–5 years</strong></b> of estimating experience in steel fabrication, structural steel, or heavy manufacturing environments.</li></ul><p><b><strong>Technical Skills</strong></b></p><ul><li>Strong knowledge of steel fabrication processes and manufacturing workflows.</li><li>Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications.</li><li>Experience with estimating software and strong proficiency in MS Excel and MS Office.</li></ul><p><b><strong>Industry Knowledge</strong></b></p><ul><li>Familiarity with fabrication codes and standards such as CWB and ASME is an asset.</li><li>Understanding of shop production processes, labour costing, and material utilization.</li></ul><p><b><strong>Soft Skills</strong></b></p><ul><li>Excellent analytical and numerical skills.</li><li>Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.</li><li>Effective communication skills with internal teams and external clients.</li><li>Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.</li></ul></p></p>Create Your Resume First
