<p><b>SUMMARY </b><br></p><p>Supervises a crew of skilled tradesmen and other employees in the execution of preventive maintenance, repair and modification of production machinery, plant equipment, buildings and grounds. Responsible for minimizing down time due to breakdowns by keeping machinery in good operating condition. <br></p><p><b>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</b><br></p><p>Include the following. Other duties may be assigned at the Manager's discretion.<br></p><p>· Participates in continuous improvement of the plant process, maintenance procedures and equipment direct skilled electrical and mechanical tradesmen in the performance of preventive maintenance activities<br></p><p>· responds quickly to the needs of other departments in directing repairs when breakdowns occur<br></p><p>· reviews preventive maintenance schedules and all requests for maintenance <br></p><p>· determines priorities and directs the performance of work required when required, obtains the services of external contractors, machine shops, service shops and suppliers of material and equipment, spare parts, labour and other skills<br></p><p>· ensures all work is completed in compliance with quality standards and health and safety and environmental regulations<br></p><p>· ensures that an inventory of essential spare parts and material at levels required to prevent production delays is maintained<br></p><p>· recommends the purchase of spares not normally kept in stock<br></p><p>· using the computerized maintenance management system, develops and implements maintenance procedures<br></p><p>· records required data in the computerized maintenance management system<br></p><p>· manipulates the Maintenance Planning & Control System (a computerized maintenance management system) to optimize the efficiency of the system to provide work instructions, schedules, histories, etc. <br></p><p>· trains subordinates to use the computerized maintenance management system<br></p><p>· analyzes performance histories, maintainability of equipment and costs <br></p><p>· recommends maintenance and modification projects which will reduce time and costs of repairs while improving productivity, product quality, safety, etc.<br></p><p>· co-ordinates all aspects of projects assigned - prepares project requests, orders and expedites required materials and parts <br></p><p>· supervises the installation and commissioning of new equipment and machinery<br></p><p>· determines maintenance requirements by reviewing, daily and in co-operation with other departments, the condition of all operating equipment<br></p><p>· when required, assists subordinates with troubleshooting and repair of defective machinery<br></p><p>· co-ordinates the planning and scheduling of personnel for maintenance functions ensures that all maintenance and repair work is done according to accepted standards and that future needs are anticipated<br></p><p>· trains, coaches and advises employees in the safe and healthy performance of their work, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and identification of hazards in the work area <br></p><p>· assists in the selection, training and evaluation of skilled tradesmen and other subordinates <br></p><p>· recommends promotion or other changes in employment status of subordinates when performance warrants such change<br></p><p>· initiates request for permanent or part time employees<br></p><p>· maintains a firm and consistent but enlightened approach to discipline while ensuring that subordinates conform to all job requirements within the limits prescribed by company personnel policies and within the terms of the collective agreement<br></p><p>· advises the Maintenance Manager of significant employee problems<br></p><p>· receives complaints by employees under the grievance procedure <br></p><p>· whenever the complaint is likely to result in a formal grievance, refers to the Maintenance Manager to ensure consistency with other departments and previous decisions<br></p><p>· schedules vacations for maintenance personnel ensuring adequate staffing<br></p><p>· reviews all legally required records and ensures that they are kept up to date and available for inspection at any time<br></p><p>· ensures, with the assistance of all maintenance personnel, that all service manuals, instructions, procedures, drawings, etc., necessary to service and maintain plant and equipment, are complete and up to date, and are available for maintenance personnel to carry out the maintenance work<br></p><p>· works outside of regular business hours, when required<br></p><p>· completes all required documentation<br></p><p><b>RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO QUALITY AND SAFETY</b><br></p><p>· must be aware of and supervise employees work according to established safety standards<br></p><p>· ensures that his staff is appropriately trained in all matters related to health and safety<br></p><p>· ensures that WHMIS guidelines are followed<br></p><p>· ensures that all personnel wear or use appropriate safety clothing and equipment<br></p><p>· initiates appropriate disciplinary action for violations of health and safety guidelines<br></p><p>· receives reports of accidents and acts appropriately<br></p><p><b>SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES</b><br></p><p>· Directly supervises the employees in the following positions: <br></p><p>· Maintenance Technician<br></p><p>· Craftsman - Electrical & Mechanical<br></p><p>· Electricians <br></p><p>· Mechanics <br></p><p>· Maintenance Storekeeper<br></p><p>· Janitor<br></p><p><b>TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED</b><br></p><p>To perform this job the Maintenance Supervisor must be able to safely and properly use all of the tools and equipment used by the Electricians and Mechanics.<br></p><p><b>QUALIFICATIONS </b><br></p><p>To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the minimum knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to enter the position.<br></p><p><b>EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE </b><br></p><p>· College Diploma or bachelor's degree is preferred. Certificate of Qualification as 443A Industrial<br></p><p>· Millwright and 442A Industrial or 309A Construction Electrician is preferred.<br></p><p>· Certified Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technologist or Technician, OR Electrical or<br></p><p>· Mechanical P. Eng. designation is an asset. <br></p><p>· Minimum of 5 years' supervisory experience of maintenance staff, contractors and/or tradesmen.<br></p><p>· Minimum of 5 years' experience working in the area of Maintenance Services. <br></p><p>· Basic knowledge of building systems: plumbing, electrical, mechanical, HVAC and emergency systems.<br></p><p>· Sound knowledge of health and safety practices and provincial regulations.<br></p><p><b>LANGUAGE / COMMUNICATION SKILLS </b><br></p><p>· Ability to read and interpret documentation such as blueprints, other technical drawings, operating<br></p><p>· instructions, procedures manuals, technical journals, reports, and legal documents.<br></p><p>· Ability to write<br></p><p>· technical reports that conform to prescribed style and format.<br></p><p>· Ability to effectively present information to management. <br></p><p>· Ability to communicate effectively and convey instructions to internal and external partners, resolve conflicts and maintain open lines of communication with team members and other departments.<br></p><p><b>MATHEMATICAL SKILLS </b><br></p><p>· Ability to perform accurate calculations using mathematical concepts covered in the Apprenticeship Program.<br></p><p>· Demonstrated strengths in preventative maintenance, budgeting and costing.<br></p><p><b> </b><br></p><p><b>COMPUTER SKILLS</b><br></p><p>· Working knowledge of various software applications, including MS Word, MS Excel, Visio (or other drawing programs).<br></p><p>· Ability to learn the Maintenance Planning & Control System.<br></p><p>· Good understanding of PLC software and programming.<br></p><p><b>REASONING ABILITY </b><br></p><p>· Ability to apply understanding based on education, training and experience to carry out instructions given in written, oral, numeric or diagram form.<br></p><p>· Ability to resolve problems involving a large number of variables in standardized situations.<br></p><p><b>CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS</b><br></p><p>· The Maintenance Supervisor must have a Certificate of Qualification for Millwright or Industrial Mechanic OR a Certificate of Qualification for Industrial Electrician. <br></p><p><b>PHYSICAL DEMANDS</b><br></p><p>· The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Maintenance Supervisor.<br></p><p>· While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, talk and hear; and occasionally lift, reach with hands and arms, use hands and fingers to manipulate small parts and components, climb, stoop, kneel, twist, and crouch. <br></p><p>· Must have good vision.<br></p><p>· Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as demanded by job necessities.<br></p><br>
